Polling over time shows little support for control control

Gallup has gauged the public’s attitude toward gun control for decades and while right after a mass shooting happens there is a predictable spike in public interest about gun control, the interest cools off pretty fast.
Other polls from the summer of 2019 show more support on specific gun control measures such as banning assault weapons or strengthening background checks.
The clearest polling data around gun issues comes when an election hangs in the balance. For example, look at these questions from 2018.
